April 20: Fully Immersed

I cannot express how happy I am here. It wil be difficult leaving on Saturday. I am fully immersed in the experience with only thinking in French and speaking in French (OK, I cheat sometimes when I can’t find the word). It’s very gratifying to be in a class (of 4) with those who are as interested in speaking French and having fun as I am. We are at the point of making jokes (blagues) in French so one nows we have really progressed. While we are tired by lunchtime, it is because we have truly taxed our brains. You already know that I LOVE French, but I am a different person here.

Morning class was fun. We had to spontaneously speak about the topic that we randomly chose (bunch of cards on the table). Then we had to answer questions from our classmates. The teacher would then tell us about the mistakes we made. While it might sound intimidating, we have reached the point of taking risks. Laughter also helps us learn.

One of my favourite phrases today is: “Tu es mechant!” (“You are mean”—said to a classmate).

Today we did not have a cooking class. We had a free afternoon and were advised not oto do any homework. So, I ventured into town (Roanne) and “avoir fait une promenade” (went for a walk).

Then I did a wine tasting of the following:

  • Tattinger Champagne
  • 2009 Pommard-win de Bourgogne
  • 2004 Grnd Cru Saint-Emilion, Chateau Fombrauge-vin de Bordeaux

Then for dinner:

  • Terrine de crevettes et gellee (shrimp in a terrine)
  • Blanquettes de veau
  • Fromage blanc
  • Nougat glacee with chocolate sauce
  • More wine

No running today—no time. Only time to drink and eat.
