France Through My Lens-Carcassonne At Night

I didn’t warm up to Carcassonne during my first visit years ago. I stayed inside the medieval city in August. It was hot, crowded, and honestly, a bit overwhelming. I left thinking it just wasn’t for me.

But everything changed on my return visits, especially when I finally saw Carcassonne at night. In January, with blue skies and almost no tourists, I started to appreciate its beauty. And then, on a June stay a few years later, I saw a completely different side of the city. As evening settled in, the walls began to glow, only one or two other visitors wandered La Cité (the medieval heart of Carcassonne) and Carcassonne became one of the most photogenic places I’ve ever experienced.

My featured image for this post—part of my France Through My Lens series—was taken on that June night.

1. Carcassonne At Night

During my January visit, my friend and I just visited in the late afternoon. While the black and white photos of the exterior were rather haunting, the photos from the same angle and perspective of the outside walls at night were the ones that I preferred.

They were taken at about 10:15 pm and I was near one of the entrances to La Cité. The lights are strategically placed around the walls and they gave off a golden light with dramatic shadows, creating a really special atmosphere.

2. Theme: Light, Stillness, and a Different Side of Carcassonne

During that June evening, I wandered in and around La Cité and the whole atmosphere changed. The crowds had disappeared, the heat of the day was gone, and instead of bright summer light there was this soft mix of moonlight and warm illumination on the ramparts and pathways.

Only a handful of other visitors were around, so it felt calm and unhurried—almost like Carcassonne had slowed down for the night. I was walking on my own, but I felt completely safe and surprisingly peaceful.

3. Why I Chose This Photo

This nighttime photo captures the Carcassonne I wish I had discovered years earlier. Because it’s taken from outside the walls, there are no people—just the illuminated fortress standing quietly on its own. It’s the way I want to remember Carcassonne: quiet and beautifully lit.

I do love this other photo of Carcassonne taken in January, primarily because of the blue sky and green grass; however, there’s nothing like a dark, evening image.

4. What Trip/Post Was This Taken From?

This photo was taken during my 2 month trip to France during my Trip #33 to France. I stayed in Carcassonne for 4 nights. The weather wasn’t great when I arrived in mid-June. It was cloudy, cool and raining. But things improved the next few days with daytime temperatures between 18°C-22°C-perfect weather for that time of year and for exploring the fortress at night.

You can read about the entire trip here: Trip #33.

5. Why You Should Visit Carcassonne

Choose your timing wisely when planning a trip to Carcassonne. High season definitely brings crowds, but visiting early in the morning or later in the evening (after dinner, when most tourists have left) makes a huge difference. The off-season and shoulder season are also great options. Be sure to explore the ramparts and outer walls, and don’t skip the views from below—especially from the riverbanks and nearby bridges.
